Rosebery Name Origin

Rosebery is named after Archibald Phillip Primrose, the fifth Earl of Rosebery, Prime Minister of England from 1894 to 1895.

Rosebery Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, although growth was minimal until the 1880s. Most of the area stayed in the ownership of one family during the 1800s, and was not made available for residential development until the interwar period. In 1961 much of the land was purchased by the Rosebery Town Planning Company and developed as an industrial area. In the late 1990s the area experienced significant change and urban renewal, with obsolete industry being replaced by a mixed use residential and employment centre. Rapid population growth took place from the late 1990s, with the population more than doubling between 1996 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area.

Rosebery Features

Major features of the area include Turruwul Park, Bannerman Crescent Reserve, Southern Cross Drive Reserve, Tarakan Reserve and two schools.
