Silverwater Name Origin
The origin of the suburb's name is unknown. It may have been a reference to the nearby Parramatta River which could have provided silver reflections of light off the water
Silverwater Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1790s, when the first land grants were made, with land used mainly for farming and agriculture. Some population growth took place in the early 1800s, although growth was limited due to the remoteness of the area. Industrial and residential expansion occurred from the 1880s to the interwar period. The most significant residential development occurred in the post-war period, aided by further industrial growth. The first stage of the Silverwater Correctional Centre was opened in 1970. The population increased substantially between 1991 and 2006, largely a result of an increase in institutional (prison) population. The population was then relatively stable between 2006 and 2011.
Silverwater Features
Major features of the area include the Silverwater Correctional Complex (consisting of the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre, Silverwater Correctional Centre, Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre and Dawn de Laos Correctional Centre), Slough Business Park, Deakin Park, Hume Park, Newington Reserve and Silverwater Park.
