South Coogee Name Origin

The name Coogee is said to be taken from a local Aboriginal word koojah which means 'smelly place'. Another version is koo-chai or koo-jah, both of which mean 'the smell of the seaweed drying' in the Bidigal language, or 'stinking seaweed', a reference to the smell of decaying kelp washed up on the beach.

South Coogee Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s. Population was minimal until the late 1800s, with growth into the early 1900s. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, aided by public housing construction. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2011 due to small changes in dwelling stock, dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling. Some growth is expected in the future, largely from the Endeavour 88 development on former Department of Defence land.

South Coogee Features

Major features of the area include Randwick Cemetery, Ivor Rowe Rock Pool, Gollan Park, Latham Park, McCartney Park, Popplewell Park, South Coogee Bowls Club, Latham Park Tennis Centre and South Coogee Public School.
