St Leonards Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1853 when the first land grants were made. Land was used mainly for farms, orchards, vineyards and stone quarrying. Growth took place from the 1890s, following the opening of the North Shore railway line. Retail and office growth occurred from the 1920s. Significant residential growth took place during the post-war years, with many apartments and townhouses built from the 1960s, and accompanying commercial growth in the 1970s and 1980s. In more recent years, there has been considerable growth around the St Leonards station, with many resort-style apartments. Rapid growth took place from the early 1990s, with the population increasing five-fold between 1991 and 2011, predominantly from high density housing.
