St Peters Name Origin
St Peters is named after an Anglican church built in the area in the 1830s.
St Peters Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1799 when the first land grant was made, with land used mainly for agriculture. The village of Sydenham was laid out in 1838, and the village of St Peters in 1840. Residential and industrial growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line in the 1880s. St Peters was a brick-making centre for Sydney until the post-war years. From the post-war years some industrial sites were redeveloped as parks and housing. The population declined slightly during the 1990s, largely due to the demolition of about 150 homes by the Commonwealth Government which were deemed to be uninhabitable due to aircraft noise, the resulting vacant land becoming Sydenham Green. The population then increased between 2001 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
St Peters Features
Major features of the area include Sydenham Green, Camdenville Park, May Street Reserve, Memory Reserve, Simpson Park, Francis Playground, Rowswell Playground, St Peters Town Hall, Alexandria Landfill, St Peters Business Park, the Cooks River Rail Freight Terminal, the St Peters and Sydenham railway stations and one school.
