Stanmore Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1799, although population was minimal until the 1830s. Some growth took place between 1835 and 1860, although land continued to be used mainly for farming. More substantial development occurred during the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway station in 1878. Expansion continued during the post-war years, with many flats constructed and a number of large villas converted into boarding houses. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2011, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Major features of the area include Stanmore Plaza, the retail areas along Parramatta Road, Crammond Park, Eve Sharpe Reserve, Stanmore Reserve, Weekley Park, Whiteley Reserve, Montague Gardens, Bain Playground, Salvation Army Booth College (Stanmore House - Conference and Training Centre), the Stanmore railway station, Newington College and several other schools.
