Summer Hill Name Origin
The earliest known use of the name 'Summer Hill' was in 1876, for a land subdivision adjacent to the present-day St Andrew's Anglican Church. The name Summer Hill is thought to be a name chosen by the land sub-divider, presumably based on an attachment for England.
Summer Hill Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1794 when the first land grant was made. Population was minimal until the 1870s, spurred by the opening of the railway station in 1879. Growth continued through to the 1920s. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, when many large estates were subdivided, and mansions were demolished and replaced with houses, flats and units. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011.
Summer Hill Features
Major features of the area include Summer Hill Skate Park, Darrell Jackson Gardens, Gower Street Reserve, John Paton Reserve, the Summer Hill railway station, Trinity Grammar School and two other schools.
