Surry Hills Name Origin
Surry Hills is named after the Surrey Hills in Surrey, England.
Surry Hills Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the late 1700s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth was minimal until the mid 1800s, when many factories, warehouses and worker’s terraces were constructed. Significant development occurred in the post-war years as low property and rental prices attracted a large number of new migrants to the area. Since the 1980s many young professionals have moved into the area, some of the old houses have been renovated, and factories have been redeveloped for residential use. The population increased between 1991 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 2006 and 2011.
Surry Hills Features
Major features of the area include Prince Alfred Park, Sydney Police Centre, Centennial Plaza, The University of Sydney (Surry Hills Campus), Sydney Dental Hospital, Prince Alfred Park Pool, Fred Miller Park, Frog Hollow Reserve, Harmony Park, Shannon Reserve, Ward Park, Taxi College and a number of schools.
