Sylvania Name Origin

The name of the suburb clearly relates to its original wooded vegetation ('sylvan' which means wooded or inhabiting the woods).

Sylvania Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Population was minimal until the 1880s when land was first subdivided. Growth was slow until 1919 when more scattered development occurred, especially along the water frontage areas. Ferries ran between Blakehurst and Sylvania from 1863 and were replaced by Tom Ugly's Bridge in 1929. Significant development occurred during the 1950s. The population declined slightly during the 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.

Sylvania Features

Major features of the area include Southgate Shopping Centre, Georges River Bridge (Tom Ugly's Bridge), Sylvania Hockey Park, A R Hurst Reserve, Box Road Recreation Reserve, Canberra Road Reserve, Gwawley Creek Reserve, Kangaroo Point Reserve, Shag Point Reserve and a number of schools.
