Taren Point Name Origin
Taren Point was originally called Comyns Point, then Cummins Point and later Commins Point, believed to be after a local resident. The origins of the name Taren Point is unclear.
Taren Point Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Population was minimal until the late 1800s, when oyster farming was established. Most of the area was used for industry, with the residential section in the west built from 1911. Many of the early houses were fishing shacks and weekenders (some of which still exist). The most significant residential development occurred from the 1960s. The population declined slightly during the 1990s, and then increased between 2001 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly between 2006 and 2011, largely medium and high density housing.
Taren Point Features
Major features of the area include Gwawley Park, Gwawley Oval, Taren Point Reserve, Woodlands Road Reserve, Aspley Place Baseball Field, Captain Cook Bridge and Taren Point Public School.
