The Rocks Name Origin

The Rocks is named after the sandstone found in the area.

The Rocks Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Many convicts built their own cottages with hand hewn rock in The Rocks area. Millers Point and Dawes Point developed as ports from the 1810s. In the early 1800s The Rocks was characterised by a mainly working class population, many of whom worked in industries associated with the wharves, while Millers Point was characterised by a mix of terrace houses and large residences. By 1844 The Rocks was the most densely populated area in Sydney. By the 1850s the warehousing and wholesaling function of Millers Point was firmly established. Between 1910 and 1930, as a response to the outbreak of the plague, much of Millers Point was redeveloped, with many dwellings demolished and public housing constructed. In the 1950s the area was characterised by predominantly port-related functions, with worker’s housing, warehousing and light industries. Significant redevelopment occurred in much of the area in the 1960s and 1970s, with many terrace houses refurbished and restored, and industrial buildings recycled or replaced with office towers, hotels and public buildings. The population increased rapidly from the early 1990s, with the fastest growth between 2001 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area.
