Turramurra Name Origin

Turramurra is named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'high or big hill'.

Turramurra Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from 1822 when the first land grant was made. Land was used mainly for timber-getting and market gardens, with orchards established from 1840. Growth did not occur until 1890, following the opening of the railway line, with subdivision between 1910 and 1920. Significant development took place in the 1960s. In more recent years, some medium density housing has been constructed along the Pacific Highway. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.
