Ultimo Name Origin
Ultimo is named after a former estate in the area.
Ultimo Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1796 when the first land grant was made. Growth took place from the 1850s into the 1880s. By the 1890s the population began to decline as more industries became established in the area, due to proximity to the city and to the water. For most of the 1900s Ultimo was a mix of industrial buildings and terrace style houses. From the 1980s many of the factories began to close down and industries moved out. From the 1990s the area began to experience redevelopment, with some old terrace houses restored, and many industrial buildings replaced or converted into residential use. Rapid growth took place from the early 1990s, with the population trebling between 1991 and 2011 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area.

Major features of the area include University of Technology Sydney (City Campus Broadway), Sydney TAFE (Ultimo College), Powerhouse Museum, ABC Ultimo Centre, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, Fig Lane Park, Mary Ann Park, McKee Street Playground and two schools.
