Wareemba is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "place where sweet water meets salt water".
Wareemba Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, with land used mainly for farming. Growth took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by improved access. The Nestle chocolate factory was established in the early 1900s. Significant development occurred during the interwar and post-war periods. The population increased from the mid 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing, largely from the development of new housing on redundant industrial sites (Abbottsford Cove).
Major features of the area include Sydney Rowing Club, Sydney Women’s Rowing Club, Abbotsford Cove Foreshore Park, Battersea Park, Coralie Reserve, Henry Lawson Park, Montrose Reserve, Quarantine Reserve, Werrell Reserve, Abbotsford Wharf and Abbotsford Public School.
