Waterloo Name Origin

Waterloo is named after the Battle of Waterloo.

Waterloo Settlement History

Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s, when several industries were established. Growth was minimal until the early 1900s. Most of the area stayed in the ownership of one family during the 1800s, and was not made available for residential development until the interwar period. Post-war growth was spurred by the construction of public housing estates. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then almost doubled between 2001 and 2006 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. Substantial population and housing growth continued between 2006 and 2011. Recent growth is due largely to redevelopment, particularly in the Green Square Urban Renewal area.

Waterloo Features

Major features of the area include Waterloo Town Hall, Crown Square Shopping Plaza, Crown Park, Crystal Park, Joynton Park, Mary O’Brien Reserve, Nutfield Park, Tote Park, Waterloo Park, Waterloo Oval and several schools.
