West Ryde Name Origin
West Ryde is named for the western part of Ryde, which is named after the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
West Ryde Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from 1798 when the first land grant was made. Population was minimal until the mid 1800s when many orchards were established. Growth took place from the 1880s into the early 1900s, spurred by the opening of the railway line and land subdivision. Significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.

Major features of the area include TAFE NSW Northern Sydney Institute (Ryde College), West Ryde Town Centre, Ryde-Parramatta Golf Club, Anzac Park, Bell Park, Lions Park, Maze Park, Wendy Park, West Ryde Hall, West Ryde Community Hall and a number of schools.
