Woollahra Name Origin
Woollahra is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'meeting ground'. It was originally known as Upper Paddington.
Woollahra Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, although population was minimal until 1856 when a village was established. Rapid growth took place during the 1880s and 1890s. Expansion continued during the early 1900s and immediate post-war years, with some gentrification in the 1960s. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased marginally between 2006 and 2011.
