Yowie Bay Name Origin
Yowie Bay is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of echoes'. It was originally called Ewey Bay.
Yowie Bay Settlement History
Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Growth was minimal until the 1880s when Yowie Bay was known as the recreation centre for the Shire, with easy boat access and many holiday houses and boating shacks. Residential subdivision began in 1910, although significant development did not occur until the 1950s. The population increased slightly during the 1990s, and then was relatively stable between 2001 and 2011, a result of few new dwellings being added to the area and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Yowie Bay Features
Major features of the area include Port Hacking Open Sailing Club, Henry Turner Reserve, Wonga Road Reserve and Yowie Bay Public School.
